Karen is a very experienced Registered General Nurse with over 20 years clinical practice both in acute hospital settings, community nursing services and care homes. She has significant expertise in managing clients with neurological injury including traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury. Since leaving community nursing, she has worked as an Independent Case Manager within litigation, completing Immediate Needs Assessments (INAs) and managing a busy case load of clients, both adults and children, with brain injury, birth injuries and spinal cord injury. She is an Advanced member of The British Association of Brain Injury Case Managers (BABICM).
Karen works for Jane James & Associates as an Expert Witness taking instructions from both Claimant and Defendant firms for full care, aids and equipment reports and liability reports. Her specific skills are in the areas of brain injury, spinal cord injury, chronic neurological conditions, clinical negligence and oncological conditions affecting both adults and children. She also undertakes INAs under the Rehabilitation Code. She has given evidence in the High Court and is an Accredited Expert Witness through the Bond Solon/Cardiff University Expert Witness accreditation programme.
During her time working in community nursing services she was responsible for developing and implementing complex care packages to maintain individuals in their own homes. Whilst working as a nursing sister in a residential chronic care establishment she was responsible for the care needs of 40 clients with brain injury, progressive neurological disorders, learning disabilities, physical conditions and terminal illness. Karen is also an accredited Level 3 Moving and Handling Trainer.
Karen is also a member of the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA). She further has a law degree (LLB Hons 2002) and a post graduate diploma in law (2004).
