Reybridge Eventing and British Eventing World Class rider David Doel returned to competition after a four week lay off due to a broken collar bone to win section B of the 2* Barbury International Horse Trials from world number 1 rider Andrew Nicholson from New Zealand.
David riding Miss Caruso owned by Mrs Jane James and the rider were the overnight leaders on a dressage score of 36.1.
A clear round show jumping put the pair in a commanding position for the cross -country. The course designed by Mark Phillips rode well but asked some questions for the younger horses. The time was difficult to achieve, and no partnership came in within the time, so riding the course positively was key to success.
David rode a good clear round with 8.8 time penalties to finish on a score of 44.9 ahead of Andrew Nicholson on Jet Set IV who recorded one of the fastest cross country rounds of the day with just 2.4 penalties, but it was not enough to close the gap, finishing on 47.1
David’s other rides were Billy Pastime owned by Miss Gillian Jonas who completed a double clear to finish 18th in his second 2* appearance. And Chap finished mid way through section D.
David said” I have to say a big thank you the team at Reybridge who kept horses fit and ready for this event”
Caroline Marwood, David’s groom won the award for the best turned out 2* horse in section B.
David’s next international will be Camphire in Ireland in two weeks where the three horses will compete in the CCI 2* competition.
